Austin is a very good, calm baby. I don’t mean to sugarcoat
things and it has been a challenging 10 days. The lack of sleep and my lack of
mobility because of the surgery have made things tough on Hayden and me. However,
the positives far outweigh the negatives. Here’s a few examples:
The Austin and Sophie
video.
Perhaps it’s Daddy’s narration, but it seems to me that Austin understands and
appreciates Sophie. I am astounded by how engaged and interactive he is with
this toy!
Meeting Jeter.
Jeter has been good. He knows Austin is here and has made a few exploratory
sniffs. It seems, especially since Austin is pretty limited in his interaction,
this type of slow development between the two will be just right. That said, I
am impressed with Jeter thus far. We will continue to watch closely of course.
Pulling over on the
way home from the hospital. This, of course, was not funny at the time. But
with age, this tale is turning more humorous. Hayden was driving home from the
hospital. I had to sit in the front because my mobility was so limited. The
mirror we installed to peek at Austin fell off and Mommy was quite worried that
she may have over bundled Austin. Hayden couldn’t see him and we started
freaking out and pulled over a block from the Mall frantic to make sure he was
ok. He was perfectly fine; sleeping serenely.
Blowing the peepee
teepee sky high. Uncle Scott sent us these gems and it turns out we need
them. We had heard little baby boys are notorious geysers and our boy is living
up to that notoriety. When we don’t cover, a perfect arch of pee clears the
changing table and lands on the rug below. When we do and we don’t hold on, his
geyser is so forceful it blows the teepee off and chaos ensues.
Pull-ups with Daddy.
Although a little young, at 4 days old, Daddy practiced calisthenics with
Austin. His grip was so strong when daddy pulled him up he hung on there. Mommy
was horrified. Everyone survived.
Click for Feedings. A
not so great movie I saw years ago, called Mimic was about cockroaches that
take over the world. They made this clicking noise that got under your skin
throughout the movie. Austin makes this when he is hungry. I’m convinced I’m
just a boob to him, but I suppose that’s to be expected at this stage.
Razor burn? Hayden comes in with the baby after changing him and is concerned because it appears the baby has scratches on his chin and lower cheek."Did you scratch the baby?" He asks me. "What? Where? What is that?!" I reply with increasing hysteria. Thinking the worse, bubonic plague, etc. I finally figure out that Hayden was kissing the baby and hadn't yet shaved. A little soothing balm on the baby and a lecture to Hayden about being careful with his kisses.

Uncanny poop timing.
This kid has a comedic timing that I used to think was exaggerated in movies.
We’re still quite novice in the diaper changing department and it takes us time
to deal with clothing, cleaning and diapering. The process is frantic and made
more challenging by a squirmy baby who sometimes is upset. When it is finished,
we are relieved and exhausted. We bring him back to our bed, recline and “ferrf” he poos again. We want to cry,
but instead we laugh and laugh.
Wonderful vignettes here!
